A kineticist does not draw power from a universal elemental plane. They carry their element inside themselves, stored in a personal gate, a demiplane they alone hold and that exists nowhere else. What they use, they must replace. What they cannot replace, they go without.
Standard magical theory describes elemental kineticists as conduits, channels open to a vast external source of elemental energy that they draw from as needed. This is not how it works in practice.
A kineticist's gate is a personal demiplane. It is theirs: not a window to somewhere else, not a tap running from an infinite reservoir, but a space they carry within themselves that holds a finite quantity of their attuned element. When a kineticist produces an impulse, they are drawing from that store. When the store runs low, their output degrades. When it empties, they have nothing left to draw.
The gate is attuned to one element at character creation. That element is the only material the gate can hold and the only material a kineticist can work with. A fire kineticist cannot store water in their gate. An earth kineticist cannot produce fire. The attunement is fixed and permanent. The gate is shaped by the element it was opened to, and reshaping it is not a procedure anyone in the 9th Era has documented successfully.
A kineticist must refill their gate during every rest. The process is simple but non-negotiable: they require a quantity of their attuned element in physical form, they spend an hour drawing it through the gate, and the material is fully consumed in the process. At the end of that hour, the gate is full and the material is gone.
Without the required material, the rest period provides no recovery. Time passes. The kineticist sleeps. Nothing is restored. Their abilities remain at whatever level they ended the previous period, and they begin the next encounter drawing from a gate that did not refill. A kineticist who cannot resupply their element is a kineticist who is depleting without replacement, and the only direction that runs is down.
Cost: 1 Bulk of attuned element per character level.
Time: 1 hour. The attunement must be uninterrupted. Combat, forced movement, or sustained distraction breaks the process and requires restarting from the beginning.
Result: Material is fully consumed. Gate is fully restored. Standard rest recovery applies normally.
Without material: Rest provides no recovery of any kind. The kineticist does not restore HP, Stamina, spell slots, or class abilities. The gate remains at its current level.
Each kineticist attunes to a single element. The physical material required for recharge is the mundane, real-world form of that element. It must be genuine. Processed substitutes, magical simulacra, and alchemical approximations do not satisfy the gate's requirements. The material the gate recognizes is the material as it exists in nature.
| Element | Required Material | Acquisition Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Fire | Combustible fuel (coal, oil, dry wood) or Starfire for saturation-attuned practitioners | Standard fuel is widely available at most ports. Starfire requires a separate supply arrangement; see the Starfire reference. |
| Water | Clean water, unprocessed | Abundant on most habitable worlds and stations. Salt water does not substitute. Chemically purified water satisfies the requirement; magically created water does not. |
| Earth | Unworked stone or dense soil | Accessible on any world with a surface. Processed stone (cut, fired, or worked) does not satisfy the requirement. Raw excavated material does. |
| Air | Open atmosphere, uncontained | The gate draws from ambient air during the hour-long attunement. The kineticist must be in open atmosphere or an unenclosed space. Sealed rooms with recycled air do not satisfy the requirement. Void does not satisfy it at all. |
| Wood | Living or recently cut plant matter | Must be organic and relatively fresh. Processed timber (treated, dried, or worked lumber) does not substitute. Living plant mass at volume satisfies the requirement. |
| Metal | Unalloyed ore or raw refined metal | Must be a single metal, unalloyed. Common options are iron, copper, or tin. Worked alloys (steel, bronze) do not satisfy the requirement. Mint-cast ingots of unalloyed metal do. |
A kineticist who has missed one or more recharge cycles does not lose their abilities cleanly. The gate depletes gradually as they draw from it through combat and use, and a gate that is partially full produces partially capable output. Impulses that required a full gate to sustain become unsustainable. Sustained effects flicker. The range and reliability of what a depleted kineticist can produce narrows toward whatever their current store will support, and at the bottom end of that range, toward nothing at all.
Kineticists who operate in environments where resupply is constrained (long void transits, worlds with different elemental compositions, enemy territory that does not have their material) plan ahead. The ones who have been doing this for years treat their material as a logistical priority at the same level as food and ammunition. The ones who do not tend not to have long careers.
