Occult 9 · Debris Field Civilization · Memory Magic
The 7th Era destroyed a planet. That planet was Caruun. What remains at Rim 88 is a stable debris field where the survivors and their descendants have spent 1,200 years building a civilization across thousands of rock fragments connected by corridors, bridges, and pressurized tunnels.
The people of the Wake, called Remnants, are predominantly Elves and Gnomes. They have had twelve centuries to process grief and turn it into something harder: a methodical, generational effort to reconstruct the complete record of what Caruun was, and to determine exactly what destroyed it. They know something. They have not shared it. They are still deciding what to do with the information.
The Remnants practice memory magic, a distinct occult tradition that retrieves impressions from objects, spaces, and the recently dead. This is not necromancy. It does not raise corpses. It reads what remains of consciousness in material.
The Vashier have been informed of this distinction in terms they understood clearly enough never to return to the Wake.
Predominantly Grounders by self-identification. Significant Skylord presence for ship operation. They refuse Spacer classification despite being formidable fighters when motivated. This is a values statement, not a capability statement.
Governing body, composed of Principal Remembrancers from major fragment-settlements. Their institutional memory goes back 1,200 years without a gap. Their records on the 7th Era are the most complete surviving account in the system.
Maintains and expands the reconstructed record of Caruun. The most complete record of a dead world in the system. Access is controlled and tiered. Several parties have offered significant resources for access. All offers have been declined.
Faction actively investigating what caused Caruun's destruction. Overlaps with Deep Memory Archive but is operationally separate. They leave the Wake regularly. They don't explain where they go. They have been working for 1,200 years. They have something.
Engineers maintaining and expanding the physical connections between Wake fragments. Guild authorization required for any new fragment connection. The most practically essential faction on the Wake.
Remnants operating offworld commercial relationships. They know more about what moves between worlds than any other single organization. They share some with the Council and keep the rest as operational resource.
