"The boundary of the system. The Void is closest here. Things come through. Most of them don't explain where they came from."

Overview

The Mouth is the outermost world in the system, at Rim 489. Here, the boundary between normal space and the Void is catastrophically thin. Irregular breaches occur, through which entities, objects, and occasionally people arrive without having traveled through conventional space.

Nobody has determined what is on the other side of the boundary or why it fails at this location specifically. The population of The Mouth is the most genuinely mixed in the system — anyone who has arrived through a breach, by definition, has no home world nearby.

The Four Roles

Every resident of The Mouth eventually falls into one of four roles:

Closers
Those who seal breaches when they occur.
Receivers
Those who assess and integrate arrivals.
Traders
Those who manage off-world commerce.
Walkers
Void Walkers who navigate deliberately near the boundary.

Peoples & Ancestries

Dominant Ancestries

No dominant ancestry. The most genuinely mixed ancestral population in the system. Significant populations of ancestries not found elsewhere, whose origins the Unknown Origins Council documents.

People Classification

All four peoples equally represented. Unusual concentration of Void Walkers — the proximity to the Void boundary makes The Mouth the most studied location for Void Walker research.

Factions

Breach Authority

The governing body of The Mouth, responsible for monitoring, assessing, and when possible, managing breaches. They have no budget for the scope of their mandate and have adapted to this by making very good decisions with limited resources.

Walker Society

The organization of Void Walkers based at The Mouth. They study the boundary, document what comes through it, and when authorized, enter deliberately for research. They have a higher return rate than the theoretical maximum. No one knows why.

Formian Collective

A large, organized community of Formians who arrived through a breach 200 years ago. They have become fully integrated into The Mouth's economy and governance. They are the most organized faction at The Mouth and are politely aware that this gives them more influence than their numbers suggest.

Unknown Origins Council

Tracks the ancestries, languages, and backgrounds of arrivals who do not match any known ancestry. They have documented 47 distinct populations whose home dimension, world, or era has not been identified. They are patient.

Theological Commission

Representatives of all major faith traditions who monitor arrivals for theological implications. Several arrivals have been highly theologically significant. The Commission documents this carefully and has ongoing disputes with itself about what it means.

Material Exchange

The trading organization that manages commerce between The Mouth and the rest of the system. They specialize in items that arrived through breaches, whose properties are frequently unusual and whose provenance is frequently undocumented.
