“No surface civilization exists. The storms would not allow it. The Arks do.”

Overview

Threnull is a gas world with violent perpetual storm systems that make surface habitation impossible. All of Threnull's civilization exists on Arks — massive flying platforms with enough atmospheric anchoring technology to ride the storm currents rather than fight them.

Storm-harvested minerals from Threnull's lower atmosphere are critical components in Yalos ship construction, making Threnull economically central despite being difficult to visit. Aeromantic and electromantic magic are highly developed here.

Peoples & Ancestries

Dominant Ancestries
  • Sylph (native, highly adapted to atmospheric conditions)
  • Barathu (native aerial beings, sapient citizens)
  • Human (Ark-born, several generations removed from surface)
  • Gnome (significant, drawn to the aeromantic tradition)
  • Halfling (Ark communities, adaptation specialists)
People Classification

Predominantly Skylords. Significant Spacer presence for Ark defense and mineral extraction contracts. Grounders technically don't exist — everyone is born in the air. The Barathu are classified as something else entirely.

Factions

Ark Council

Governing body of Threnull, composed of representatives from the eight largest Arks. Authority over Ark policy, storm routes, and off-world trade. What happens between Arks is technically each Ark's business. What happens to the storm-minerals is the whole Council's business.

Condensate Guilds

The organizations that run storm-mineral extraction, processing, and trade. They have a cartel arrangement with Yalos that no third party has successfully disrupted. Their political weight is disproportionate to their Ark population.

Navigator Orders

The trained pilots and navigators who guide Arks through the storm systems. Navigator disputes about routing have precedence over Ark Council rulings in practice. They know it. The Council knows it.

Stormcallers

Aeromantic practitioners who specialize in reading and redirecting storm patterns. They are part scientists, part navigators, part priests. They argue among themselves about which part is primary.

Surface Expeditions

A faction that conducts expeditions into the lower atmosphere and surface-adjacent zones for research and resource extraction. They have the highest death rate of any occupation on Threnull and the best mineral yields.

Barathu Collective

The political and cultural body representing Barathu interests in the Ark Council. The Barathu were here before the Arks. They are aware that the Arks are aware of this. The relationship is collegial and carefully maintained.
