Tafe
Arcane 7 · Academic World · Nobody Agrees On Anything
"Tafe teaches everything to everyone and everyone draws different conclusions. The Grand Academies have been asked to explain the disproportionate number of graduates who become extremists. They are still meeting about it."
Overview
Tafe is the system's center of formal scholarship and the closest thing it has to a neutral ground, which means it is also the system's ideological pressure cooker. No dominant culture, no governing creed, no unified polity with the power to silence any voice in particular. Every people is equally represented. Every ancestry has a community here. The academies teach everything to everyone, and what everyone takes away from a Tafe education is, without exception, something different.
The world has no unified government, only a loose framework of academic institutions and arbitration agreements that everyone technically respects and practically ignores when inconvenient. This is not a flaw the system was designed with. It is a flaw the system was designed to avoid and has proved incapable of avoiding, because the same openness that makes Tafe useful as neutral ground makes it constitutionally unable to choose a side. The only thing holding Tafe together is that everyone is too invested in keeping it neutral to break it, and that the moment it ceased to be neutral, it would cease to be useful. No faction has been willing to test this.
Tafe graduates are disproportionately represented in extremist factions across the system. The Grand Academy Convocation attributes this to the quality of their education.
Peoples & Ancestries
All peoples are equally represented on Tafe. Mixed-ancestry population is the norm. The unusual thing about Tafe is its sheer variety. Every ancestry in the system has a community here, mixed-ancestry individuals are so common that mixed is the dominant cultural identity, and the Void Walker Conservatory draws Void-touched individuals from every world. On top of the residents there is always a rotating population of off-world students, scholars, and exiles.
Classification: All four peoples equally. The most evenly mixed world in the system.
World Stats
Factions
Tafe's diversity produces an extraordinary number of competing factions. No single group holds real authority for long.
The Grand Academy Convocation
The governing body of academic institutions. Produces laws, arbitration frameworks, and most of the system's formal scholarship. Their authority is enormous in theory and frequently ignored in practice. They have been deliberating on an academic freedom policy since the 3rd Era.
The Neutrality Commission
Enforces Tafe's role as neutral arbitration ground. Their power depends entirely on other worlds believing they are neutral. They are. Mostly. The parts they aren't are very carefully documented and filed in a way that makes them difficult to find.
The Void Walker Conservatory
The premier Void Walker training institution in the system. Tafe's neutrality makes it the safest place to train for a dimension that kills the unprepared without first asking their faction affiliation.
The Heresium
A splinter academic institution teaching what the Grand Academies won't. Technically not illegal. The Convocation would very much like it to be. Currently housed in a converted warehouse district with a three-year waitlist.
The Concordat of Blades
A formal dueling culture that arose because arbitration is slow and violence is faster. They have a strict code: disputes go to arbitration first; if arbitration fails after thirty days, the Concordat provides a neutral venue. They are, technically, an academic body studying conflict resolution through direct engagement.
The Free Lecturers
Academics who travel between worlds teaching wherever they will be received. They carry ideas the academies consider too dangerous to institutionalize. The Convocation monitors them and quietly funds several of them. Both parties find this arrangement worth maintaining.
Shard Communes
Student communes formed outside the academy structure, with their own governance and curriculum. The oldest Shard Commune has been running for eighty years and grants its own credentials, which most worlds formally refuse to recognize and practically often accept.
The Arbitration Black
Former Neutrality commissioners who went rogue and now sell arbitration services to the highest bidder. They are effective. They are not neutral. They are very good at making it look otherwise.
The Returned
Graduates who left, saw the system, and came back convinced the academies are failing. They teach unsanctioned courses. They have a following. The Convocation is uncertain whether to be more concerned by the courses or the following.
The Convergence
A faction trying, in earnest, to unify Tafe's competing groups under one banner. Their meetings are long. Their progress is minimal. They are optimistic past all evidence. Their most recent unity proposal received formal responses from three of the fourteen invited factions. Two were declines.
The Offworld Patron Councils
Every significant off-world power funds academy research in exchange for curriculum influence. The Neutrality Commission has detailed opinions about this that it expresses very carefully.
The Radical Alumni Society
An alumni network coordinating between graduates who have become extremists elsewhere in the system. They share methods, not ideology. Tafe's most dangerous alumni network and the one the Convocation least likes to acknowledge producing.
The Burn Institute
A research faction studying revolutionary movements across the system. The Convocation considers them dangerous. They consider the Convocation a case study.
The Offworld Student Union
Students from other worlds who organize around their home world politics rather than Tafe issues. Currently arguing with itself about whether to maintain formal neutrality on the Orthuun expansion question.
